PPD Crime Analysis Unit Produces CityStat Report for Public Release

As part of the Pittsfield Police Department’s ongoing effort to incorporate criminal intelligence analysis into day to day operations and to provide the public with more thorough information about criminal activity and other activity impacting quality of life, the Department is pleased to announce the release of CityStat.

According to Chief of Police Michael Wynn, “CityStat is our latest effort to produce more transparent information for the public about what is occurring in the City.  Similar to online access to our Press Log, and our recent incorporation of the RAIDS ONLINE crime mapping application, CityStat will allow residents to directly access information about current developments in the City.”

CityStat reports are a monthly public report to the community on current police priorities.   Initial CityStat reports focus on Part I (serious) crimes, but future reports will also include traffic, community concerns and public disorder issues.  CityStat reports are compiled utilizing data vetted by the Massachusetts State Police Crime Reporting Unit.

CityStat reports include a monthly comparison to the prior month, a year to date comparison to the prior year, and a trend analysis comparison to the 5-year average for each category analyzed.  Following the analysis, CityStat reports also include useful tips and information to help residents protect themselves from the identified trends.

Mayor Bianchi noted, “In the previous FY14 budget, I requested Chief Wynn identify one thing that could make a difference in his department, and he stated a crime analyst.  The analyst, who was hired during FY14, gives statistics which allow us to accurately distribute resources and continue to enhance public safety in Pittsfield. I look forward to the release of CityStat and encourage everyone to check it out online.”
