About The CodeRED Mobile Alert App

The following information has been provided by Emergency Communications Network, the manufacturers of CodeRED® in order to help you understand how the CodeRED Mobile Alert App works. Click here to visit the CodeRED® Mobile Alert App site.

“Designed to keep you informed and aware, the CodeRED Mobile Alert App taps into the national CodeRED® Emergency Notification System and alerts subscribers located within the reach of a given notification generated by public safety officials. The App tracks your position, so no matter where you are when an alert is issued, you will receive notifications that affect you right on your mobile device.

The CodeRED Mobile Alert App delivers information from community officials in areas that are subscribed to the CodeRED Emergency Notification System. Additionally, national organizations used by public safety officials and police departments may utilize the system to send messages to targeted geographic areas. Future uses could include augmenting Federal Government issued critical alerts, such as those transmitted through IPAWS as an additional Alert Disseminator in support of the FEMA program. Subscribers may also upgrade their accounts to receive customized weather alerts based on NOAA’s National Weather Service bulletins.

The CodeRED Mobile Alert app comes with a complimentary 30-day trial of CodeRED Weather Warning™, a program that sends subscribers notifications when they are in the projected path of severe weather. Notifications are received from The National Weather Service and immediately communicated with CodeRED Mobile Alert subscribers without any delay. The CodeRED Weather Warning add-on is an additional $4.99 per year.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My 30-day CodeRED Weather Warning trial expired and I paid the $4.99 to continue to receive weather alerts, but the app still shows my account is expired.

A: The following procedure should correct the issue: Reboot your phone, then activate the CodeRED Mobile Alert application. Check the settings screen – it should display the new expiration date. If you continue to have issues, close out of any running applications. Restart the CodeRED Mobile Alert app and check the settings screen. You can also try to power your device off and then back on.

Q: I’m not getting any community or emergency alerts in my hometown. Is the app working?

A: Yes, the app is working. Your city, county or state may not be a current subscriber of the CodeRED Emergency Notification System. However, missing children and missing at-risk individuals alerts will always be sent to CodeRED Mobile Alert app subscribers who are located in the area of the alert through a CodeRED client, A Child Is Missing. For all other alerts, if you travel to an area that is a CodeRED subscriber, you will be sent alerts if you are in the reach of a given notification. If you would like your city, county or state to subscribe to the CodeRED system, contact your elected officials today and let them know your community would benefit from this service.

Q: I’m not receiving any weather alerts and I know I’m in the projected path of a storm.

A: The app is geo-aware, requiring that you enable your location services. If the app cannot determine your current location, it cannot send you notifications that are affecting your area. Push notifications must be enabled on your device and also on the CodeRED Mobile Alert application. On the home screen, select the Settings icon, make sure the Location Services slider is turned to on and scroll down to the CodeRED Mobile Alert app to also ensure the slider is on for Location Services. Also on Settings, select Notifications and then scroll down and select the CodeRED Mobile Alert to ensure the Notification slider is turned on.

In addition, subscribers will only receive alerts for Warnings issued by NOAA and for Community Alerts issued by CodeRED. We do not issue alerts for the following types of weather conditions: Watches, Advisories, Statements, Forecasts, Outlooks and Synopsis.
Q: The app is draining my battery, but I want to make sure I receive alerts.

A: Location services can be turned off to save battery life. You only need to check in with your location once every 7 days. We will use your last location and your warning radius setting to determine what alerts will be delivered to your iPhone. You will receive an alert if your location becomes more than 7 days out of date. After 14 days, you will no longer receive warnings on your iPhone so be sure to update it weekly.

Q: I live in Rhode Island and weather is displaying fine for my area but I cannot see the tornadoes in Dallas, TX that are on the news.

A: The regional warnings map only displays weather in your area. In the app, you can control the size of the area you are interested in with the Map Zoom tool on the settings screen. The Map Zoom tool on the settings tab controls how weather alerts are displayed. Based on your current location, weather alerts can be retrieved up to a 500-mile radius.

Q: When I use the app, does it use any data from my data plan?

A: Yes, just like other apps, unless you are connected to a wireless network, using the CodeRED Mobile Alert must use data to access current alerts. To limit your data usage, make sure you are connected to a wireless network whenever possible.
