TACONIC STUDENT-ATHLETE

LUCAS BENJAMIN

RECOGNIZED WITH “HIGH SCHOOL HERO” AWARD

Boston Sports Radio FM 98.5 & Plymouth Rock Assurance Team Up To Honor The Brightest High School Heroes In Massachusetts

The Pittsfield Public Schools Athletic Department is pleased to announce that Taconic High School senior, Lucas Benjamin, has been recognized as a “2013 Massachusetts High School Hero”.  Boston sports radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub, and Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation, have teamed up in an effort to promote high school athletics across Massachusetts.   The 98.5 Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation  “High School Heroes” program recognizes the on and off-field accomplishments of student- athletes.

Amongst a field of nominees from throughout the state, Lucas Benjamin was selected for his exemplary work and dedication both in the classroom and on the playing field.  His leadership at his school, as well as in the community, distinguished him from other nominees.

Representatives from 98.5 The Sports Hub, Plymouth Rock, and local insurance provider, Wheeler & Taylor, will be on hand to present the award – as well as a $1,000 scholarship – to Lucas Benjamin on Tuesday, September 24th at 5 PM.  The awards presentation will take place on the fronts steps of Pittsfield High School, which is located only a short distance from the Wheeler & Taylor offices.

Benjamin, a Taconic High School Senior with a 101 Grade Point Average, is the son of Joseph Benjamin and Bernadette Kennedy.  Captain of the Taconic Swim Team, and a member of the school district’s Student-Athlete Leadership Academy, Benjamin is also tremendously active as a student-leader in the classroom and in the Berkshire community.

A member of the National Honor Society, Benjamin’s notable academic achievements include being enrolled in a variety of advanced placement courses, being a recipient of the Dartmouth Book Award, and serving as President of the Taconic Chapter of the Massachusetts Junior League.  This past summer, Benjamin was selected to participate in the Syracuse University Summer Writing Program.

With a genuine interest in pursuing a career that combines his interests in government, political science, statistics, and Classics (Latin and Greek), Benjamin has demonstrated leadership ability through a wide variety of activities that he participates in.

In addition to the role he plays as a leader at Taconic High School, Benjamin has been an invaluable member of many local youth organizations – including spearheading efforts with S.A.D.D. and the Berkshire County District Attorney.  Benjamin has served as a Massachusetts representative at the S.A.D.D. Speaks National Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C, and has also served as a volunteer for multiple political candidates, including the 2012 campaigns of Elizabeth Warren (Senate), Richard Neal (Congress), and President Obama.  He can also often be seen volunteering his time at The Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club in an effort to benefit less fortunate children in our area.

“Based on his position as a hard-working team leader, his strong academic performance, and the roles he plays in our community, Lucas is deserving of this recognition,” said Taconic Swim Coach Mayur Desai.  “Without question, he represents everything you could hope for in a student-athlete.  This is a prestigious award that Lucas and Taconic High School should be proud of.”

Plymouth Rock has teamed up with 98.5 The Sports Hub to find and honor High School Heroes across Massachusetts. The program will identify seven high school students who demonstrate exemplary work in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the community. All seven winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship and be recognized at the Massachusetts High School Football Championships at Gillette Stadium this December.
